Nongoma Women and Youth in council march against gender based violence

On Friday, 4 October Women and Youth in council of Nongoma led the gender based violence peaceful march that took place in Nongoma. The community marched from KwaLindiziwe Sports field to Multipurpose. Members of Nongoma community expressed their despondency regarding the killing of women in Nongoma and in the country by chanting songs and delivering the memorandum to the Nongoma Court Manager.


According to the latest crime statistics of 2018/19, One hundred and thirty five rapes were reported in Nongoma which makes Nongoma one of the areas with highest rate gender violence crimes. It is reported that every 2 to 3 days there are new cases of sexual offence cases reported.


Reading the memorandum the deputy Mayor of the Women in council Mrs Tamara Sithole said “It is worrisome that Nongoma is statistically among those with high rate of gender based violence and we what are you doing as the law to send a clear message that will be instrumental in fighting against these acts?”


Nongoma Mayor Albert Mncwango joined the march to demonstrate and show support to the women and children of Nongoma under the slogan real man don’t rape or kill women. The Mayor said “this is a societal issue and it’s important especially the men to stand up against such atrocious acts do better. The law should take its cause and be firm against perpetrators; they should not be allowed to be amongst our community”
